FUL to the Brim

Word of the week on Monday was Lawson’s ACRASIA – A loss of self- control. It was worth an extra 5 points when I challenged as well.

I had already spotted the list I wanted to do for the B & C Grade Challenge. It seemed a better idea to stay with that rather than doing a blog on triple A.

A Grade Challenge

The words below that I have made up are NOT allowed.

What allowable word does each combination make?

None of them are ‘weird’ words you won’t have heard of, so maybe B and C graders could find most of them this week as well

GROINFUL

BLACKFUL

TRIPEFUL

NOOSEFUL

ROUGHFUL

ROUGH is a sore point for me after the tournament. I had ROUGHIE on my rack which couldn’t fit on the board and spent too much time trying to make a word though the T that had just been played. Didn’t find it because there is nothing there to find, but completely overlooked the D I could have used to make DOUGHIER ☹

B and C Grade Study List

A longer list than usual for you this week because it might be the last for a few weeks. I might do something from Argentina, but that is not definite.

There are only 2 words of 5 letters that end in -FUL. AWFUL and WOFUL.

However, there are 45 words of 6 letters that end in -FUL. I suspect we should all be playing more of the words from the following list. For a change the meanings will mostly be obvious, so they are not included. It is useful to know which ones take an S, so I have put a lower case S where the plural is allowed

AIDFUL – AIMFUL – ARMFULs – ARTFUL – BAGFULs – BARFUL – BIBFULs – BOXFULs – CANFULs – CAPFULs – CUPFULs – DUEFUL – DINFUL – EARFULs – EYEFULs – FITFUL – GUTFULs – HATFULs – IREFUL – JARFULs – JOYFUL – JUGFULs – LAPFULs – LAWFUL – MANFUL – MUGFULs – NETFULs – PANFULs – PENFULs – PEPFUL – POTFULs – RUEFUL – SAPFUL – SINFUL – SOBFUL – TINFULs – TOPFUL – TUBFULs – URNFULs – USEFULs – VATFULs – WAEFUL – WILFUL – WOEFUL

A couple of interesting points:

Although TOPFUL doesn’t take an S it does take a second L for TOPFULL. The only one of those words that can have a -FULL ending. Also, it is surprising that USEFUL takes an S for USEFULS. It doesn’t feel logical to me.

There are some front hooks available as well:

H--ARMFUL

C--ARTFUL

F--EARFUL and T--EARFUL

D--IREFUL

M--USEFUL
