Three in Front - Apr 2

Whenever someone starts with a 5 letter word finishing on the centre square I try to think of 3 letter plays to put in front of it to get back to the Triple Word Score

On the last club night one game started with the word CLING. My brain failed me on this one because all I could think of was OUTCLING. I tried that when the right letters came along several turns later. That was a wrong word, but I got lucky when my opponent did not challenge. There are 4 words that could have been made, but they eluded me at the time. They are:

CIRCLING, MUSCLING, NONCLING, ORACLING

Some of the nicest plays of this sort come when someone gets a good score at the start for a 5 letter word beginning with Q. Have a look at these possibilities:

QUEST can be changed to CONQUEST, OPAQUEST or UNIQUEST

QUATE can be changed to ADEQUATE, COEQUATE or TORQUATE

QUITE can be changed to MESQUITE or MEZQUITE (84 points!)

QUINE can be changed to BASQUINE or MESQUINE

QUOTE can be changed to MISQUOTE or OUTQUOTE

QUANT can be changed to ALIQUANT

QUILT can be changed to BEDQUILT

QUEAN can be changed to COTQUEAN (a prostitute)

QUIET can be changed to DISQUIET

Happy Scrabbling

Patrick
